On Saturday the 11th of March, Muslim Women’s Welfare of Australia (MWWA) hosted a special event recognising International Women’s Day and celebrating the strength, leadership and contributions of Muslim women across our community.
Held during the holy month of Ramadan, the evening also brought the community together to share Iftar — a meaningful moment of reflection, generosity and connection.
Before the formal program began, and continuing afterwards, guests had the opportunity to explore a vibrant marketplace of pop-up stalls featuring a diverse range of women-owned small businesses. The stalls made a lively and welcoming space where attendees could connect, support local female entrepreneurs and discover the incredible talent within our community.
From modest fashion labels and handmade products to wellness products, artisan desserts, baked goods and henna artistry, the pop-up marketplace highlighted the creativity, skill and entrepreneurial spirit of Muslim women.
Initiatives like this not only celebrate women’s achievements but also provide important opportunities for women-led businesses to grow, network and showcase their work.
The program brought together community leaders, advocates and elected representatives to highlight the importance of empowering and supporting women from all walks of life. At a time when conversations about inclusion, representation and opportunity matter more than ever, the event reinforced the importance of ensuring women’s voices are heard across community, culture, business and politics.
MWWA President Hajjah Faten El Dana OAM addressed the audience, reflecting on the organisation’s ongoing work supporting women and families and strengthening communities.
The program also featured remarks from Ms Yasmin Catley MP, Ms Julia Finn MP, Ms Kylie Wilkinson MP and Ms Charishma Kaliyanda MP, alongside Councillor Wendy Lindsay and Superintendent Christine McDonald — demonstrating the importance of strong partnerships between community organisations and government.
The evening opened with a Qur’an recitation and included performances by Mariam Saad and Iman Farrar, an award presentation recognising outstanding contributions, a video showcase, and a vibrant fashion show celebrating culture and identity.
A highlight of the evening was the award ceremony celebrating the dedication and generosity of the many volunteers who support the important work of MWWA. The awards recognised individuals who have shown outstanding contribution, commitment and service to empowering and supporting Muslim women in our community. It was a meaningful moment to acknowledge these inspiring women whose time, compassion and leadership continue to strengthen the mission of the organisation and positively impact the wider community.
Special recognition was also given to the head of the association, Hajjeh Faten El Dana OAM, whose tireless work, unwavering commitment and dedication continue to be the backbone of MWWA. Her leadership and passion play a vital role in guiding the organisation and supporting the many initiatives that benefit the community.
One stallholder who participated for the first time shared that she left the evening feeling “so empowered as a Muslim Australian woman,” describing the night as inspiring and praising the positive energy, organisation and sense of purpose behind the event — a reflection of the impact initiatives like this continue to have across our community.
Bringing together the spirit of Ramadan and the message of International Women’s Day, the night was a reminder that when women are supported to lead, contribute and succeed, our entire community benefits.
Congratulations to Muslim Women’s Welfare of Australia, the volunteers and the many women-owned businesses who contributed to the evening, continuing their important work building stronger, more inclusive communities.
