On Saturday 11th November 2023 the Muslim Women's Welfare Association of Australia held a pioneering seminar on the harms of gambling in collaboration with the Diversity Programs & Strategy Hub (DH) at Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) and Gamble Aware NSW.
The seminar featured the participation of experts from various backgrounds and fields, including a religious counselor and a psychologist from Gamble Aware NSW, a representative from the Diversity Programs & Strategy Hub at SLHD, and individuals who were affected by the harms of gambling in our Arab society but were able to rid themselves of this destructive habit, where they spoke about their experiences before, during and after their gambling addiction.
The purpose of this seminar was to open a purposeful dialogue, exchange experiences and exchange ideas on effective solutions to overcome this social scourge.
The Forum served as a safe space for our community to discuss strategies, seek guidance, and foster a supportive environment. The presence of a religious counsellor and a counsellor from Gamble Aware as well as an employee from the Diversity Programs & Strategy Hub at SLHD has provided a holistic approach to raising and discussing this important topic, with an overview of the services available and the support that members of our community need.
We’d also like to thank the Diversity Programs & Strategy Hub (DH) at Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) for their support which facilitated this seminar. It is through these partnerships that we can collectively address the challenges posed by the harms of gambling and work together for a healthier, resilient society.
Finally, thank you to everyone who participated, contributed and helped make this seminar a success. Together we can make a difference in our community!
